Corsica and the indivisibility of the French Republic

By Gérard-François Dumont
English

Corsica, a territory forming part of the French Republic, is an island whose geographical nature should first be specified by comparing it with the other islands under the sovereignty of France or another European Union country. Then its particularities imply considering its physical geography, the importance of its isolation and its demographic dynamics. This raises questions about the frequent modifications of its institutions, which are supposed to respond to its particularities in the context of a French Republic that is “indivisible” according to its constitution. But doesn’t the political situation of Corsica also raise the more general question of decentralization in France?
