Regions in France

Geographical giants, but political dwarfs?
By Gérard-François Dumont
English

In France, after the disappearance of the provinces at the time of a royalty that had become absolute, the importance of the regional fact took time to emerge to finally materialize with the regionalization of 1982. Since then, numerous legislative texts have modified the competences of the regions and the way in which they can exercise them. In addition, a drastic reduction in their number in metropolitan France has been implemented since 2016. In this context, this analysis focuses on three questions: how did France end up undertaking regionalization? How can we consider the mapping of regions in France compared to other European democracies? Do the competences available to the regions give them wide scope for action or, on the contrary, is there a contrast between their vast geographical perimeter and their political importance?
